Greenwich

The Old Royal Naval College (1) is the setting for many blockbuster movies and two great spaces, the astonishing Painted Hall and the Royal Naval College Chapel are open to the public.

Painted HallThe Painted Hall (in picture) (1a) is extremely popular with film-makers. It is used for the wonderful bell ringing concert in The Madness of King George, the meeting of world leaders addressed by August de Wynter (Sean Connery) in The Avengers, the 'Palace of Versailles' in Quills and the interior of the 'Venice' church where the council of the Illuminati meet in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The Chapel (1b) became the Catholic 'St Mary of the Fields' for 'Wedding II' in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The exterior of the Old Royal Naval College (in picture) has proved equally adaptable. It Old Royal Naval Collegebecame the 'Pentagon' in the 1992 wartime melodrama Shining Through. In Patriot Games it's both the the 'Royal Naval College, Greenwich' where Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) is lecturing and 'Buckingham Palace', where he foils an IRA attack. It also became the bustling area around Charing Cross Station in Shanghai Knights.

In the The Four Feathers, the parade, with over 500 soldiers, bands and horses, marches from King Charles Court along College Way to the Cutty Sark. Across Romney Road, the pillared walkway underneath the Queen's House (in picture) (2) became a London street in Sense and Sensibility.

Greenwich Park (in picture) (3) appears in Sunday, Bloody Sunday as Glenda Jackson and Murray Head take the precocious kids for a scamper in the park. On the opposite side of the park, Vanbrugh Castle, 121 Maze Hill (4) became the grand 'Highgate' house, where Cathy Tyson sends out a tray of refreshments to Bob Hoskins while she services a rich client in Neil Jordan's Mona Lisa. Close to the entrance to Greenwich Park, is The Gloucester (5), a real gay bar which appears in Beautiful Thing.
