Greenwich Observation Wheel - New Attraction for Summer 2008

The Greenwich Foundation and PWR Events Ltd are delighted to announce a new addition to the landscape of Greenwich for summer 2008 – an Observation Wheel that stands taller than Nelson’s Column!  At 55 metres from the ground visitors will be able to take in panoramic views beyond St Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London to the west, across the river and past Canary Wharf to the heights of Hampstead Heath, and east to the Olympic site in the Lea Valley.  In the foreground, the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site will be laid out in a rare perspective.

The Wheel will be situated within the Old Royal Naval College in front of the Pepy’s Building Visitor Centre and will be open to the public from 21 June to 28 September 2008.  The Wheel is a new attraction for Greenwich helping to boost the profile of the World Heritage Site and enhance the visitor experience at a time when the Cutty Sark remains closed for restoration, and Greenwich pier is under reconstruction.  In addition to welcoming thousands of tourists, one thousand free rides will be offered to local schools.

Two New Attractions Open in London Bridge Area

There’s an exciting few months ahead in the London Bridge area. February sees the opening of two new attractions - London Bridge Experience and the re-launched Fashion & Textile Museum.

The London Bridge Experience is a new £2 million historical attraction which combines an educational experience with stunning visual effects. Based in the vaults and excavated tombs at the southern end of London Bridge it will open its doors to the public on 22 February. Advance tickets are available costing £19.95 for adults and £14.95 for children.

Across the other side of London Bridge station on Bermondsey Street, the Fashion and Textile Museum re-opens after nearly two years. A small permanent exhibition by Zandra Rhodes opened towards the end of 2007 but 8 February sees the first in a programme of changing exhibitions - Peacocks and Pinstripes, a photographic study of the often-overlooked area of men’s fashion. Other new features at the FTM will include a Fashion Cafe and a retail area for designers and manufacturers to showcase exclusive fashion, textile and jewellery items.

Details of the above and more can be found on the website www.discoverlondonbridge.com, including information about the Switched On London festival (7-14 February 2008), February half-term and Easter holiday activities around the London Bridge area.

Tower Bridge Exhibition - Business is Booming

In 2007 Tower Bridge Exhibition enjoyed strong visitor numbers, even during periods when many other London attractions experienced poor results. Tower Bridge management attribute this success to the exceptional value that the exhibition offers its visitors, with an adult ticket costing just £6.00 and family tickets starting from £10.00.

This year the exhibition aims to improve upon its product offering by updating the interactive panels in the high-level Walkways, drawing upon the stunning London skyline that can be viewed from inside.

Tower Bridge will also continue to impress pedestrians and sailors alike with its legendary bridge lifts; last year Tower Bridge was raised nearly 1000 times, and similar figures are predicted for 2008. If visitors do not get to experience the real thing they can now enjoy the new bridge lift experience animation, situated in the exhibition's Victorian Engine Rooms.

London City Airport Fun Day 2008 - Saturday 5 July 2008

The London City Airport Fun Day is now in its 12th year and represents a spectacular day of family entertainment, whilst raising much-needed funds for the local Richard House Children’s Hospice. Their 550mx40m space is remarkably transformed from a working airport into a theme park within a few hours. Last year, Fun Day hosted over 50 attractions and exhibitors and 2008 will be even bigger. The unique event will also feature London’s only Air Show.

During the 6 month promotional period of Fun Day, some 1.5 million passengers will pass LCY. This is combined with a further 315,000 local business people and residents who will be reached by Fun Day specific promotional activity on a number of occasions. The promotion of Fun Day is a unique and cost-effective marketing opportunity to reach over 1.5 million key city business persons. The event itself enables brands to be exposed to a vast audience from east London, making a highly visible contribution to the local community in which they operate and undertake business.

For further details on how to get involved, please contact Bonnie Clayton, Sponsorship & Corporate Partnership Manager, on Bonnie.Clayton@lcy.co.uk or 07970 988636.

Transport Updates

New Station Opens at Langdon Park on the Docklands Light Railway

A new station, Langdon Park in Tower Hamlets on the Docklands Light Railway opened in December 2007. Situated between All Saints and Devons Road stations on the Docklands Light Railway route to Stratford, the £7.5m station has been funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government, Leaside Regeneration and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets providing better public transport access, for thousands of local residents who live and work in this part of east London. Local families were presented with free Oyster cards.

Transport for London has also opened the second platform of its new Stratford station. This will offer passengers greater capacity by allowing Docklands Light Railway trains to run to and from Stratford alongside each other. The previous Docklands Light Railway single platform, which was part of the railway’s original 1987 route, has been permanently closed.

Docklands Pier to be Refurbished

British Waterways began work on 14 January 2008 to refurbish Masthouse Terrace Pier, used by Thames Clippers’ river bus services. Transport for London has provided grant funding of £400,000 for the pier improvement works, which will cost £500,000 in total. British Waterways is providing the remaining £100,000 worth of funding towards the project. The steel structure of the pier will be upgraded, and security improved with the installation of CCTV cameras and a new passenger shelter. Other improvements will include repainting of the pier, refurbishing the handrails, installing new Disability Discrimination Act compliant access ramps and new passenger information boards.

The project will take ten weeks and will require the closure of the pier throughout. During the ten-week closure period, Thames Clippers season tickets will be valid for passengers to use the local D7 bus service to and from Canary Wharf Pier.
