TourEast London Update

East London Week at Greenwich TIC: 2nd - 6th August 2006

Coordinated by TourEast London, in partnership with the London Borough of Greenwich and supported by the LDA, tourism providers in East London are invited for the second year running to actively participate in pulling together an eventful and fun week for peak time visitors to Greenwich TIC. This summer, we hope to generate awareness of and interest in our fantastic products amongst the local market.  Footfall figures at Greenwich TIC came to 11,000 during the first week of August in 2005 (Wednesday to Sunday).

Local businesses: In terms of investment, we would be asking primarily for your time, and you will need to pay for any free product used in food or beverage sessions, or colleagues (such as actors or story tellers), who form part of your product demonstration. We have included events, food, drink, walking, shopping, creative industries, visitor attractions, places to stay, heritage, quirky things to go and places to experience, storytellers, theatre, clubs and sport as activities to promote. *Please note that hot foods cannot be offered within the TIC.

If you would like to participate in East London Week or to offer discounted/free product for vouchers and prizes, please fill in this form and send it back to sharon@visiteastlondon.co.uk by 26th May 2006.

New Visitor Guides

Work is well underway with the revised and updated visitors guide, and we expect to go to print in June. The format and content will change substantially, and will be based around the tourism clusters of: Maritime Greenwich, Deptford, ExCeL London Campus, Stratford, Docklands & Canary Wharf, Spitalfields & Brick Lane and the Pool of London. Emphasis will be on how to access the clusters, the tourism content and how to move around between them. We will be moving away from simply listing products that we know give no real ideas nor help in planning a visit for the new market segments.

Len Lickorish Award

Sharon Chou from TourEast London has been awarded the 2005 national Len Lickorish award for best postgraduate tourism dissertation. Sharon will be presented with her award at the Tourism Society annual dinner at Colwick Hall, Nottingham on 15th June 2006.

FOCUS: The Made in Deptford Festival, 19th - 21st May 2006

The Made in Deptford festival which includes music, art, design, food, dance and heritage will bring you the spirit of Deptford and show you why, as one of the last remaining high streets in London with shop names you won’t be familiar with, it is well worth paying a visit.

Those involved in Deptford’s many food-related businesses will be tickling your taste buds with exotic recipes and charming stories. Legendary institutions such as Goddard’s pie and mash shop, family-run businesses including Wellbeloved Butchers and Cod Fathers’ fishmongers will all add to the magic with the kind of warmth and cheeky banter that evokes scenes typical of east London.

There’ll be lots to fit in during three-day festival. Whilst you’re indulging in a selection of appetizing treats, you’ll also be able to enjoy over 100 art, film, music, dance and heritage events. Dance will be brought to you by the award-winning Laban Centre for Contemporary Dance. Laban, Brazilian & Austrian artists will lead an audience on a walk through Deptford. The Creekside Creative Arts Trail will feature a varied collection of art exhibitions, open studios and "behind the scenes" tours from participating art venues. It’s an ideal opportunity to meet the artists in their own studies and perhaps snap up a bargain at the Seager Distillery.  All work exhibited will have a sale price of under £1000.

Local participation will be at the absolute heart of the project, helping to raise the profile of existing businesses, activities and organisations within the area. Deptford SE8, is just seven minutes from London Bridge, or 15 minutes on the Docklands Light Railway from Canary Wharf, is an effortless journey towards an enterprising area brimming with cultural and new creative talents.

Joined-Up Marketing For East London

On 7th April 2006 at the Museum in Docklands, London Development Agency hosted a breakfast presentation of 'The Positioning Guide: A Practical Guide to Marketing East London'. This industry preview event - the official launch is still six weeks away - gave attendees an opportunity to see the guide and to comment on its potential usefulness for them.  Attendees also had an opportunity to see the results of three research separate studies upon which the details and advice within the positioning guide are based.  A total of 58 people, representing 46 separate organisations - mostly from the private sector, attended the event and feedback has been extremely positive.
