FOCUS: ExCeL London

ExCeL London is a £300 million international venue located on a 100-acre, waterside campus in Royal Victoria Dock. It is the largest and most versatile venue in London, boasting 90,000 sq m of available multi-purpose space, compared to the 65,000 sq m offered by its nearest competitor.

The Platinum Conference Suite can stage conferences and dinners for between 400–1,100 delegates, whilst an additional 45 meeting rooms – many with dockside views – can cater for between 20–200 delegates. There are six onsite hotels, providing 1,500 bedrooms to delegates, ranging from budget to four star, 4,000 car parking spaces and three on-site DLR stations – linking to the Jubilee line. London City Airport, which is five minutes away from ExCeL London, offers over 200 flights a day, from more than 30 European destinations.

Since opening in November 2000, ExCeL London has staged over 2,000 events. More than five million people from 200 countries worldwide have visited, experiencing everything from sporting events, gala dinners and religious festivals to award ceremonies, conferences and exhibitions including successful shows such as the British International Motor Show, the Collins Stewart London Boat Show and in 2007 Star Wars Celebration Europe. ExCeL London is home to eight of London’s top 10 trade shows, and two out of three of the UK’s largest consumer shows, as well as hosting events for a number of blue-chip corporate clients, government organisations and associations. Successful shows include the

Across the campus, a new Japanese restaurant has opened, as well as an Italian and Caribbean restaurant, and a revamp of many boulevard retail units has taken place to widen the food and beverage offering.

There are also plans to increase the venue’s space, flexibility and functionality even further, as part of a seamless extension of the original building. Phase 2 intends to provide a greater sense of arrival at the east end of the venue, an increase in total event space from 65,000 sq m to just under 100,000 sq m. This will include a 5,000-seat semi-permanent auditorium, extra conference and meeting rooms, mezzanine casual dining, a production kitchen and additional underground parking. If built, Phase 2 would be completed in 2010. There are also possible plans for a leisure and entertainment district which would make full use of the waterside location and could include an additional hotel, bars, restaurants, spa, music club, tourist attraction, training academy for the local community and potentially a new casino.

Wood Wharf - a New Cityscape for the Isle of Dogs

A major new Community Park forms part of the masterplan for the comprehensive redevelopment of Wood Wharf on the Isle of Dogs, just east of the Canary Wharf estate.

The Wood Wharf Limited Partnership – comprising British Waterways, Canary Wharf Group and Ballymore Properties – has worked with one of the world’s leading architectural practices, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, and landscape designers, Martha Schwartz Partners, to develop a masterplan for the docklands site. This includes new homes including affordable and family homes, offices, shops and community facilities as well as a new Community Park – all set within a world-class cityscape.

The masterplan also aims to provide enhanced access to the waterspace with world class waterfront recreational areas, additional moorings and a new canal. There will also be a new high street with shops, cafes and restaurants running through the heart of Wood Wharf.

Full details are available on the Wood Wharf website www.woodwharf.com

Restoring East London's Waterways

Plans to restore the Bow Back Rivers which criss-cross the Olympic Park are well underway with the construction of Prescott Lock and water control structures alongside Three Mills Island in Bow.

The new lock, which is funded by British Waterways, the Department for Transport, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and Transport for London, will enable large river barges to access the area by water, helping to take hundreds of lorry journeys a week from local roads and save thousands of tonnes of CO2.

It is part of a Defra-backed recommendation for the sustainable restoration of the waterways in the Lower Lea Valley developed by British Waterways, the Environment Agency and Natural England, together with a broad range of stakeholders. The recommendation promotes a green and accessible corridor along the waterways, with a series of towpaths, cycleways, wildlife habitats and restored waterways offering new opportunities for leisure boats, water taxis, trip boats and floating restaurants alongside sustainable developments.

Eurostar

November 2007 saw the successful launch of Eurostar services from St Pancras International and Ebbsfleet International.

St Pancras International is served by six underground lines, including the Hammersmith and City line and Northern line, both of which give connections to the DLR and Jubilee line for onwards travel to east London.

Ebbsfleet International is well situated for travellers to and from east London, located just off junction 2 of the M25 and close to the Dartford crossing. Eurostar travellers can access Ebbsfleet International for free with Southeastern trains and the local Fastrack bus service.

The opening of the UK's first high speed line has transformed journey times - Paris can now be reached in 2hr 15mins and Brussels in 1hr 51mins and journeys from Ebbsfleet are 10 minutes shorter still.

From February 2008 Eurostar's frequency will increase further, with 17 trains on the route to Paris.

Docklands Light Railway Investment Programme until 2010

Until early 2010, construction will be taking place on DLR to enable the trains to meet passenger growth with the addition of an extra carriage to each train.

With passenger numbers expected to rise from 62 million in 2007 to 80 million a year by 2010, the solution is to increase trains from their current two carriages to three carriages, increasing capacity by up to 50 per cent on the busiest routes.

To enable three carriage trains to operate, work will include:

  • Extending station platforms to accommodate longer trains
  • Remodelling Tower Gateway station
  • A new station east of the existing South Quay station
  • Strengthening of viaducts to carry an additional carriage
  • Construction of two new railway junctions adjacent to Poplar and Canning Town stations to improve train reliability and frequency at these busy locations

For full details on planned works from now until 2010 visit www.dlr.co.uk/improvements
